![]() Nintendo never really cared as much about continuity anyway. Now, when Nintendo got the series back in 2002-ish, I don't believe they cared enough to do all of that research, and just took what Rare said in DKC1 and 2, that Cranky was DK's grandfather, and ran with it. ![]() ![]() And it wasn't until DK64 that they finalized the family tree and who these characters actually are. ![]() And that is why in DKC1, Cranky is still a grandfather and DK his grandson. And if DK was arcade DK, and Diddy was DK Jr., then who was Cranky? Well, he'd be a brand new character created for DKC, and so why not make him DK's grandfather. In the early development of DKC1, Donkey Kong was still the same old arcade DK, whereas Diddy Kong was actually DK Jr., however (and this is the part where grandfather comes in), Cranky Kong still existed as a character in this early stage of development. But to go back where the confusion started, let me take you back to DKC1, and this really explains quite a lot (though it's very convoluted), so here goes what I think happened. I still like to believe our current DK is Donkey Kong Junior all grown up, and that Cranky Kong is just a bit senile and forgets from time to time if DK is his son or his grandson, haha! But I mean, Rare did create these characters, and initially, yes, Cranky was meant to be DK's grandson, but eventually they cemented DK as DK jr. ![]()
